Now is a Good Time for Reflection

It really is ok if you have now nearly got to the end of the year and done little or nothing regarding reviewing what you have achieved in your career and where that has landed you in terms of what you were looking to achieve in this regard during 2022.

It is ok in terms of the old adage you cannot change yesterday; you can influence today, and you can change what you will do in the future. So, yes, its ok to have done nothing because that is now history. What is not ok is if you do not take time to reflect and make decisions on what your world looks like in 2023 and 2024, any timing outside of that is likely unrealistic. Just look at what has happened to the old world as we knew it since 2020!

We are spending a lot of time with corporate clients who are planning what their business model would look like in the next 24 months with a caveat that in the second period of 12 months there may need to be some changes. If you think about it objectively, no company of any substance commences  the new business year without a plan which incorporates a plan that indicates how objectives will be achieved whether these are desired level of growth, productivity and profit returned to shareholders and more.

Given most of us are used to participating in the business planning process why would you not use a similar approach to formalize your personal career plan for the year? After all the same rules apply.

Put simply, it’s a great idea to develop your own analysis using tried and tested business principles and modeling.

Just for now let’s call it your very own personalized SWOT analysis.

A SWOT analysis or similar has been used by management around the world for many years to best position their company, the goods and services they provide to achieve success.

SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats and if you can critically apply these categories to your career capability, skill sets and market in which you operate the chances of you securing the best possible position based on the competition you have for these roles. At a minimum it allows you to gain a better understanding of what you bring to a new organization, where you can improve your competiveness and where you may find your new employer, importantly what you should be wary of in the talent market.

So put simply, develop your personal business plan by conducting a SWOT analysis. Identify 4- 6 points in each category with proof statements or past behaviour that confirms they are real, and you will have a template to overlay on what you find when you go out into the market.  It allows an objective comparative analysis.

It is a terrific way to reflect on who you are, what you have to offer and who may be interested in providing that next career position.

Why not give it a go, rather than continually wondering what’s next or how to plan forward. Companies do exactly that and if operate within a corporate environment, you can apply the same process. You can only influence today and change tomorrow and here is a way to do it. If you would like to discuss how to reflect and act give us a call.
